Saturday, Day 14: Steven is breathing on his own

Today Steven was taken off the ventilator and is breathing on his own! This is a big step forward.

He has struggled with a fever today (102-100.5), so the PT decided not to push it with having him sit up. He is doing additional exercises and improving.

They have added a medication to aid with digestion as he still is having trouble digesting anything. They are giving Gatoraide another whirl this afternoon (which is being tube fed to him).

Right now Steven can only have swaps of water in the mouth....very frustrating for him because he wants some water and food! On Monday they are planning to "cork" him so he can have access to ice....which will lead to water and food. A speech person will also get with him and he should be able to have access to his voice again..that is if all goes well between now and then.

All of the doctors feel he is doing well.

A big thank you to Jason for lending me his laptop for a week, love you dear son!!!!!

Rachael and Drew have been an amazing help, thanks so much for everything!

I appreciate all that Angela has done during this crisis.

Thanks Mark for being an awesome brother!

Love to everyone; I'm grateful to you all for the love and support.

Signing off and Callan will be here next week to take over.

  1. Hello all,

I have been posting the daily updates for Mark and Norma and now that Callan is here, she and I will continue to keep you informed. Your words of encouragement will give Steven strength and peace of mind, please keep them coming! Though he is through the worst physically, there will be emotionally challenging times to come as he learns to regain his strength, mobility and voice. It is going to be a long haul for Steven, so feel free to send in as much as you want. The days are long and we'll have time to read to him.

    Thank you,

    Pilar

  2. My dear friend Steve,
I just heard about your situation. Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers everyday!

I know that we aren't close, but we shared incredible "Wonder Years" together along with the greatest bunch of people I will ever know. I guess I didn't realize how much you touched my life as a young person, but you did. That came to me clearly when we all met again at Monty's funeral, I didn't know how I would feel seeing you guys after 30+ years. It was such a love fest being around the gang again and finding out that we all really meant so much to each other. That is something I will carry my entire life and if you EVER need anything, I will always be there for you.

I will be keeping tabs on your recovery, and praying, praying & praying.

Much love from a lil sister from the hood - the Braeburn hood!

  3. Hi Pilar,
Thank you so very much for all you have done for my dear friend. Norma I will call you later when I think you are home so I can thank you directly.

Now for you Steven, I have been in contact with all the old gang. All have expressed their concern and send their love.

I will continue to give them daily updates and progress reports.I'm not there in person but I am out here in the weeds waiting, Praying ,and believing that you will overcome this and come back 100%. If at some point you feel you need me ther personally, then I will make arrangements and get out there. I have been talking to Paula every day on the phone and we have been catching up.

I love you so much Steven. I keep telling you this because I want it to sink into your bones. I'm still here as your dear friend and I want you back 100%. We have so much more in our lives together to not just catch up on, but to move forward with. So keep fighting, keep praying for yourself, keep believing in yourself, I have my church praying for you and on Tuesday mornings I attend a men's prayer group and I will have the group pray for you as a group. God hears all prayers Steven, He will hear yours and he will not forsake you or desert you. He is merciful and he loves you. Trust in Him to get you through this and continue the healing. Listen to your doctors, and do what they say. God works through them.

    AND BE NICE !

This challenge before you is the most difficult that you have ever faced. I believe you are up to the task. All your family, and friends surround you with love and hope, and prayers, WE WILL NEVER GIVE UP ON YOU!!

    YOU CAN DO THIS!

    I love you bro.
    Pals forever,
    Don.

  4. Steven,

It is so wonderful to hear of all your progress! I know you have a long way to go, but thank God you are so strong in every way and God is all powerful!

Know that the girls and I continue our prayers for you and yours daily. You are obviously greatly loved and cherished by many and I know you are blessed.

You will be whole again, dear friend!

    Love and Hugs and Gratefulness!

  5. Steven,

I am so glad this last report was even better! I know we have not been close in years, but I grew up with you. I know you have the ability to do whatever you want - you always have! I think of all our "adventures" in the early years. What a time we had!

I am on my way to visit my parents in Canyon Lake, Texas. My Dad's 90th birthday is on the 6th of August. I'm guessing in 34 years we will be celebrating yours as well! I just hope I'm around to celebrate it with you.

I just know you will pull through. We are all praying for you and thinking of you daily. Get well soon old friend! You have a lot of love being directed toward you

    Love you man,
    Roger Reichert
